Irish Oak. A millennium in the Making // Boann X Kentucky Bourbon Barrel

Some stories deserve a closer look.

This collaboration between Boann Distillery and Kentucky Bourbon Barrel marked the creation of the first Irish oak cask produced on Irish soil in over a century. Our job was to capture both the significance of that moment and the extraordinary hands-on work that made it possible.

Filmed over two days, the project followed the head cooper as he raised a barrel from individual staves to a finished cask. It was a chance to document a craft built on precision, patience and knowledge passed through generations, where every movement has a purpose.

We worked closely with the team to develop an intimate, observational approach, giving the process room to unfold naturally. Carefully framed interviews provided the story’s context, while the workshop footage brought viewers close to the work itself: the shaping of the wood, the assembly of the staves and the small adjustments that gradually brought the barrel together.

Behind that seemingly effortless, fly-on-the-wall feeling was a carefully considered production. We kept the crew deliberately small, allowing us to work close to the action without crowding the space or interrupting the cooper’s rhythm. Lighting was shaped to bring out the texture of the oak and the detail of the handwork, while retaining the atmosphere of a working environment.

Sound was equally important. Capturing the tools, timber and rhythm of the workshop gave the film a physical quality, drawing the audience into the process alongside the images.

The story continued at Boann Distillery for the bottling day, where the excitement gave the film a different energy. After the concentration and patience of the workshop, this was a moment of celebration, with everyone involved aware they were part of something historic.

The finished film brings together traditional craftsmanship, contemporary Irish ambition and a cinematic approach to documentary storytelling. A significant milestone, told through the people, materials and skilled hands behind it.
